Nick Taylor Description

Nick Taylor is interested in what he calls “the elegant abstraction of nature.” He has been making sculpture for over 30 years, utilizing wood and metal. His work has been shown throughout the United States and is recognized throughout the world.

“I make these objects because I need to,” says Taylor. “There’s a fire there. It is something I have to do.  I have been making objects since I got out of high school.”

Taylor is constantly looking for rhythm in a piece. He thinks in terms of music: of flow and range and tempo.  Whether he is carving wood or working with steel, he is “every bit as aware of the spaces in between as in the shape and volume of the form.”

Whether it is the subtractive process of wood carving or additive practice of cutting, hammering, welding or grinding metal, Taylor’s captivation with the organic quality of nature is profound. His work is labor intensive and often takes him a year to complete just three or four pieces.  Living along the Mendocino coast, Taylor constantly encounters and is informed by nature.  It is there that he finds beauty, calm and a sense of order.

Nick has also worked as an exhibit fabricator for the museum and entertainment industries for over 25 years. He is most noted for having been the site Project Supervisor for Anish Kapoor’s “Cloud Gate” sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park.
