Judy O’Shea began her career as an installation artist when she and her husband bought an old watermill in France. They restored the mill to grind flour and press walnut oil, but also to host visiting artists with whom they worked and exhibited for over 17 years. Since then she has created site-specific installations in both France and the United States.
Much of O’Shea’s work has been connected with particular and often historic locations. “I start with the volume and history of a space and then try to complement the atmosphere with appropriate objects – sculptures which engage in a dialogue with each other, the site, and the observer,” she explains. The installation art that results is interactive with the visitor animating the scene through the discovery of hidden elements.
