Jeffrey Beauchamp Freefall at Seager Gray Gallery

Jeffrey Beauchamp is a trickster with prodigious skills and a wry sense of humor. He could, should he choose to, paint like a Renaissance painter or Vermeer spiced with bits of Gerhardt Richter and Odd Nerdrum. Instead he lures you in to a more magical space where color rains down like confetti amid revealed bits of real landscape.  In the midst of it are rich appliqués – tenderly articulated characters, castles or open art books.  Every painting is an improvisation, the artist surfing the imagination and remaining loose enough to respond to images and impulses that reveal themselves. Asked about his influences, Beauchamp will rattle off a mixture of writers, cartoonists, filmmakers and classical artists from deKooning to Sargent, Dickens, Vivaldi, Jim Henson, Winsor McCay and Miyazaki.  With talents that extend themselves to music and writing it is not surprising.

And yet, first and foremost, Beauchamp is a supremely talented painter and draughtsman who has dedicated himself to honing his skills while constantly challenging himself to explore new territories, keeping the work fresh and entirely his own.
