Everyday Saints, an exhibition of wood and found material sculptures by artist Joe Brubaker runs at the Seager Gray Gallery from December 1 through December 30. The exhibition is a celebration of the nobility of ordinary people. A collaborator by nature, the artist has included joint creations with his son, Will Brubaker, Holden Crane, Jeff Hvid and Tim Weldon. A reception for the artists will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 14. A full color catalog for the exhibition with essay by Barbara Morris is available through the gallery.

Brubaker’s wooden carved figures echo sources of inspiration from Spanish colonial Santos and retablo objects to Egyptian tomb figures and Buddhist stone carvings. Often incorporating scraps of metal and found materials, the Everyday Saints exhibition features characters who might be met in small towns – in diners or gas stations or on the porch next door. They are solid citizens of the world, as solid as the materials they are made of, each with their own struggles and triumphs. Brubaker pays due diligence to the creation of each, encouraging viewers to make associations to archetypal characters they may have encountered in their own lives.
