Seager Gray Gallery presents “Figuring it Out,” spotlighting works by gallery artists and adding a few surprises. The exhibition features works by Robert Adams, Raquel Baldocchi, Jerome Carlin, Charles Eckart, Joshua Flint, Chris Gwaltney, Dennis Hare, Devorah Jacoby, Kate Knudsen, Nancy Legge and Waldemar Mitrowski.
The figure in art affects the viewer in a different way than other works. Because we are ourselves a figure, we relate to it more personally. We feel the gesture of the body, the warm patch of painted light or cool shadows across a face. The elongated slenderness (as in Giacometti) or shortened density of the form (Henry Moore) creates an actual physical sensation. In addition, there is the trigger of memory at scenes we recognize – the family gathered at the dinner table or the contemplation of a figure sitting alone in the dark.
