Gwaltney’s paintings have always been a reflection of his actual life and his place in it. His primary focus has been his family and the sunlit open sky along the beautiful coastline of Laguna Beach where the artist makes his home. The figures moved together or separately in direct response to actual events, the figures close and playful when the children were young, more separate as they neared adolescent and finally distant as they began making their own lives, leaving the artist to reflect on time and to forge a new identity. The new paintings in the upcoming exhibition GWALTNEY are introspective, the often lone figure redefining himself as he embraces a time of reflection and solitude.
