Seager Gray celebrates their ten year relationship with artist Lisa Kokin with an installation of works from her time with the gallery. This mini-retrospective, if you will, gives viewers a glimpse at the astonishing range of this intelligent and entirely original artist’s work.  The fourteen works included in the show can be seen in Gallery 3 and a public celebration and talk will be held at the gallery on Friday, November 20 from 5:30 to 7:30.  

The work in this installation include examples from all of Kokin’s one person exhibitions with the gallery, Ex Libro, Panacea Plus, Raveling and Facsimile as well as works from her yearly contribution to The Art of the Book and two works from her groundbreaking solo exhibition at the Boise Art Museum, How the West was Sewn. Currently Kokin is expanding the concept of asemic text (text which looks like it should be able to be read but which is actually not a real language) to include all manner of small metal sewing notions and other items to create new “dialects” which have as their basis the printed word and book page.  Her piece, Vernacular provides a sneak preview of her upcoming one-person exhibition which will open in April of 2016. 

Kokin received her BFA and MFA from the California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA, and is the recipient of numerous awards and commissions, including the Contemporary Jewish Museum’s Dorothy Saxe Award, a Eureka Fellowship, and a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship. Her work is in many private and public collections in the United States and abroad, including the Oakland Museum of California, the Buchenwald Memorial, the Boise Art Museum, Tiffany & Company, the University of Washington Special Collections Library and the Yale University Art Museum.
