During Joan’s 75th birthday show at the Beacon Theater in New York, Thompson joined Joan in a tender duet of his song “She Never Could Resist a Winding Road.” Joan admired his quiet English reserve and eloquent guitar playing and found a striking photograph of him that inspired his portrait. He made such an impression on her band that, the first night they were free, they went to see his show, marveling at his songwriting and musicianship. As Joan recalls it, “We were just floored.”
