Joan calls her portrait of Judy Collins “Judy Blue Eyes in Pink.”

She gets the title from the sparkly pink jacket Judy is wearing in the painting, one that Joan gave her at Judy’s 80th birthday party.

“She was so Judy that night,” Joan says of her friend of many decades. “She was the reigning queen.”

At Joan’s 75th birthday concert at New York’s Town Hall in 2016, Judy honored Joan on stage, singing Joan’s iconic “Diamonds and Rust,” in a duet that was one of the great performances in a star-studded night.

The two matriarchs of folk live on opposite coasts, Judy in New York and Joan in California, but they stay in touch and remain close.

“Periodically, she calls up to talk,” Joan says. “When she does, it’s hello and then laughter. And Judy’s laughter – there’s nothing like it.”
