Atlas is one of the most recent iterations of an ongoing exploration of the sea as subject matter. The ocean – vast, abundant, portending and whimsical – is as familiar to us as books are as objects. The sea’s massive scale, rhythmic motion and continuity are analo- gous to the back and forth exchange of ideas and knowledge that a book invites. Words, though fixed on a page, are fluid in meaning once they enter our imagination and our own pool of wisdom and experience.
