The Art of the Book - Sarah Bryant

Biography:

Sarah Bryant produces artist books and prints under her imprint Big Jump Press. Her
work can be found in dozens of collections including The Yale Arts Library, The Houghton Library at Harvard University, The New York Public Library, and The Darling Bio-Medical Library at UCLA. Her work has received a number of awards, including the MCBA Prize in 2011. Bryant received her MFA from the University of Alabama in 2008. She served as the Victor Hammer Fellow at Wells College from 2008 to 2011 and currently teaches book arts at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Proprietor, Big Jump Press.?Designer, printer, and binder of artist’s books including The Index (2006,) Cutaway (2007,) Point of View (2008,) ab[landmass] (2009,) Biography (2010,) and Fond (2012.) These books are exhibited widely and collected by libraries and private collectors in the United States and internationally. (See list of collections on the following pages)

UNIVERSITY TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 2011
Instructor, University of Alabama mfa in the Book Arts Program. Courses taught: Graduate level bookbinding courses including Non-Adhesive Binding, Binding III, and Boxmaking and Enclosure Design.

Aurora, New York, 2008-2011
Victor Hammer Fellow in the Book Arts, Wells College.?Two-year teaching fellowship at Wells College. Duties include teaching undergraduate bookbinding and letterpress printing courses, a role as the designer and printer for The Wells College Press, and an appren- ticeship at The Bixler Press and Type Foundry in Skaneateles. In the Spring of 2010 I was asked to stay on for an additional year. Courses taught: Introduction to Book Art, Advanced Bookbinding, The Printed Book, Art on the Press, Independent Studies in Broadside Production and Book Production.

Cortona, Italy, 2008
Instructor, Lamar Dodd School of Art, The University of Georgia. Introduction to Book Arts/Papermaking. Instructed graduate and under- graduate students in book structures, papermaking, and paper deco- ration. Taught bookbinding workshops to students enrolled in other classes.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 2007
Instructor, The University of Alabama, New College.?Creativity. Led class discussions on the nature of creativity based on readings in the fields of psychology, natural history, poetics and mem- oir. Planned and executed assignments designed to introduce students to drawing, poetry, and simple bookmaking.

WORKSHOP TEACHING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Ink Spot Press, Brighton?Art on the Press. A six session evening course for all levels of experience. Students learn how to produce imagery using flatbed cylinder presses. Techniques covered include linoleum carving, pressure printing, hand inking and blind embossing.

Boxmaking. A series of three evening courses for beginners focusing on the lidded box, the slip case, and the portfolio.

August 2012
Bookbinding Summer School. A week-long workshop covering a variety of bookbinding structures including accordions, pamphlets, and the link stitch binding.

Futurist Typography. A weekend letterpress workshop for beginners covering handset type and freeform typography on the press.

June 2011
Innovative Book Structures. A weekend workshop for printmakers and other artists focusing on a range of structures including the pamphlet binding, a few variations of accordion bindings, and the drumleaf binding.

London Centre for Book Arts?Bookbinding for Artists. A two-part evening course on structures appropriate for artists including innovative structures and the drum- leaf binding.
